It is Vital to House Train Your Puppy from the Beginning

When you decide to have your first dog, you may feel slightly overwhelmed. However if you have never before had a dog, what do you need to know to successfully turn your cute puppy dog into a very well mannered, happy dog? Below are a few of the typical concerns and tips on how to tackle these problems and deal with them.

House Training

Puppies are adorable, soft and fluffy, but they also have not been informed that eliminating anywhere they please is not acceptable behavior. Your goal, as the pet parent, is to teach your puppy where they can eliminate.

The initial step in this development is to purchase a crate. If you choose not purchase two crates, one needed for puppyhood and the second for adulthood, make sure that you buy a crate that is big enough to be employed for your dog as an adult, and get a separator. This will allow you to create a smaller space within the bigger crate.

Keep your puppy in the crate at all times when you are not able to be with them and engaged. Make sure that you also allow your puppy to be taken out every one or two hours, making sure to bring them to the targeted spot that you want them to employ as their business spot.

Use a specific word to encourage elimination – business, potty, hurry up and do it, are all good choices. Once the puppy eliminates, praise him lavishly. Over time, you will be able to let the puppy out of the crate for longer periods.

Shoving your puppy’s nose in the mess they make is one well known old wife’s tale that has been around for years that numerous owners put into practice. DON’T!  Not only will the puppy not understand why you are doing this, it may encourage them to eat their own waste.

Feeding your Puppy

Tiny puppies require being fed three times each day, in small amounts. Puppies that are older, between 10 weeks and up, need feeding twice a day. If your puppy hasn’t eaten in a day, call your vet.

What you feed your puppy depends a great deal on your vet’s suggestions, what they were eating when you got them, and your budget. However the higher the quality of food you supply to your puppy, the healthier they will ultimately be.

Look for foods that have no fillers. Avoid corn, wheat and meat meals. Also look to see that they don’t have any artificial colors included. Dry food is better for dogs because it cleans their teeth to some degree. Not only that, but you can also complement the dry food with a few tablespoons of wet food as well.

Make sure your puppy has access to clean, fresh water at all times when out of the crate.

Training Your Puppy on a Leash During Walks

As soon as you have your puppy, put a collar on her. Not only does a collar give you a place to put a nametag with your information to prevent losing your puppy, it is helpful in leash training.

Unless you want to have your dog drag you everywhere, you need to work on this skill from the start. Make sure that your dog has a walk every day and at least twice a day. Say, “Let’s go” and let the dog walk as she wants to as long as she isn’t pulling. Talking to him or her is also ideal|perfect as they will know whether or not they are doing something right or wrong.

If your dog pulls, stop walking. Wait until she looks at you and then say, “Let’s go” again. It won’t take your puppy long to realize that each time she pulls, you stop. Since she wants to go walking and wants to explore, the behavior will quickly disappear.

If you should happen to walk your puppy in the evening, you should think about carrying a TASER with you for your self defense. Your puppy won’t really understand that certain hours in certain places aren’t the best for strolling about, but you do. With a TASER along, you can buy yourself escape time, if needed, and they can be used against aggressive dogs as well.

NOTE: This post was written by a guest blogger – we do not subscribe to the idea of using a taser :)

  1. Thanks for sharing these helpful tips. I’m planning on getting a puppy soon. Not sure if I will get a Doberman or a Golden Retriever. Anyways that “old wife’s tale” about sticking the dogs nose in its mess probably would teach the pup to eat it. I never thought about that. I also thought that last paragraph was humorous about carrying a taser lol.
