The best Australian Cattle dog training should take into account that they have been bred from dingoes and droving dogs. Originally used for droving cattle long distances and working livestock on farms and ranches, Australian Cattle dogs are tireless workers. If you have an ACD that you do not plan to work, be sure to incorporate plenty of physical and mental exercise into your Australian Cattle dog obedience training.

Although not very vocal, (unless they sense danger), Australian Cattle dogs ARE pretty mouthy in that they tend to nip. “Nipping” means they bite lightly, usually at heels. Puppies nip and mouth things while they are playing and generally do not intend to hurt anyone or anything.

ACDs are also bred to specifically nip livestock in order to control them. But if they don’t have livestock to drove, they may start to nip or mouth other animal, (cats, other dogs, etc), and even people. Keep in mind that while your puppy nipping at your toes may seem sweet now, it probably will be anything but when your pup grows up.

Be very clear with your Australian Cattle Dog about your expectations when it comes to nipping.  If you are training an Australian Cattle dog, ensure that you devote an appropriate amount of your time and energy to getting them to stop nipping.

For cattle dogs that are family pets, you may want to make sure you are giving them plenty of things they ARE allowed to chew on, so that they don’t chew and bite at the things they aren’t allowed. If you’re working your dog, be very clear about which animals you want them to herd and which animals you don’t.
